St. Bede’s Grammar School is a Voluntary Aided secondary comprehensive school for boys between the ages of 11 and 16. In my day it was actually a Grammar School.
St. Bede’s was opened on 12th June 1900 in Drewton Street, Bradford, its first headmaster being Rev. Dr. Arthur HINSLEY. In my day the headmaster was Monsignor M V SWEENEY.
The school moved to its present site at Heaton Hall in 1919. The old Hall proved too small for the number of pupils and a new school opened in 1939.
The school became a Comprehensive in the 1960s and does not restrict entry of those of academic or sporting talent. It is however an oversubscribed Catholic boys’ school.
