January 1985 Andrew TURNER |
As I have mentioned previously, when we moved to Cornwall, Andrew stayed behind to finish his schooling. This situation did not last very long because in 1984 we received a phone call from him saying that he was going to join the RAF as a policeman. To say the least I was not happy at his, or should I say the recruiting office’s, choice of trade and contacted an old friend, Roy O’HARA, who was then a Flight Lieutenant in Air Traffic Control and stationed at RAF Cranwell. I arranged for them to meet, the result of which was that Andrew joined as an Air Traffic Controller in 1984 and was posted to RAF St. Mawgan in March of 1985, so effectively back home again until he was posted to RAF Cottesmore in March of 1987.

1990 - Annette TURNER |
Meanwhile the other two children went to Treviglas School in Newquay. Annette was not terribly happy although she was quite clever but did not like examinations. In her final year she was top girl student, but wanted to get out of school and start work. She went for interviews with a view to joining the RAF but in the end decided that it was not for her. Maria and I said that if she could find a job, she could leave school so she went out and got herself a job with a local accountant before moving on to the Nationwide Building Society. She also got herself a job serving behind various Night Club bars, illegally because she was only 17 at the time.

21 June 1990 - RAF Locking Nick TURNER |
Nick, who finally decided that he was going to study hard, went on to complete his ‘A’ Level GCSE examinations and in 1988 he also decided to join the RAF. He joined in the Ground Radio trades as an L. Tech. TC and, because of his educational qualifications went straight from basic training at RAF Swinderby to trade training at RAF Locking, which is just outside Weston-super-Mare in Somerset. On completion of his training he was posted to RAF Mountbatten, Plymouth in June 1990. Whilst there he had a pal who had a girlfriend named Mary MULROONEY. She had a sister named Karen and she was persuaded to come down to Plymouth to make up a foursome. This was a fateful meeting that resulted in Karen and Nick marrying in 1994. For some time this was a very long distance courtship because in 1992 Nick was posted to RAF Saxa Ford in the Shetland Isles before being posted back to RAF Stanbridge, Bedfordshire in May of 1994.

1989 - RAF Cottemore Andrew TURNER & Lanner Falcon |
Meanwhile we didn’t hear of Andrew having any romances except with a Lanner Falcon and Kestrel whilst he was at Cottesmore. This was all to change at Nick’s wedding. By this time Andrew was a Sergeant at RAF Benson and spending some of his time playing lead guitar in a group. At Nick’s wedding he met Karen’s sister Mary for the first time and she made a beeline for him and soon announced that she was going to marry him.

1995 - Mary & Andrew TURNER |
After a brief courtship, they married on 14th September 1995 in Cypress Gardens, Florida. We spent two weeks on holiday around the time of the wedding; this holiday is covered in the chapter on holidays. Andrew was posted to RAF Leuchars in July 1996 and then promoted to Flight Sergeant and posted to RAF Prestwick in July 2000.
Their son, Joe, was born on 30th December 2000 but their marriage was not going well and they parted in 2003 with Mary taking Joe and going to live with her mother in Norfolk. Their divorce became final on 5th May 2006.

Clive & Annette THOMAS |
Annette had a number of boyfriends, one of whom was Tim SCHOFIELD, brother of Phillip (of TV fame). This was however a very brief friendship as were most of those with the other boys. One of them proposed but Annette turned him down and continued to be single but then, whilst she had a part time job at Trevose Golf Club, she met Clive THOMAS, who worked at Bar Manager. He was married at the time but after they started seeing one another, his wife divorced him and Annette and he married on 23rd June 2000.

14 June 2007 - Orvieto Amy & Andrew TURNER |
Shortly after Andrew & Mary split, Andrew started going out with Amy LAZARUS with whom he worked at Prestwick. She was a Flight Lieutenant but was unhappy in the RAF and resigned her commission and decided to live in Italy and become a Wedding Photographer. This became a reality and, after Andrew had completed his 22 years, and was therefore entitled to a pension, they moved to Italy, bought a wreck of a house and married in Orvieto, Italy on 14th June 2007. As I write this they are still trying hard to get their new house habitable before the next winter comes around. They currently rent a sprawling farm house that is extremely cold in winter and doesn’t have much in the way of modern facilities. They now have two girls, Chenin, born 8th February 2010 and Lois, born 4th February 2014.

2014 - Andrew, Amy, Chenin & Lois TURNER |
In 2010, Annette went on a holiday to stay with her brother Nick and during this visit met Brian SHELLEY, a widower with three boys, Alex, Jamie and Ben. This meeting resulted in Annette & Clive divorcing and Annette moving to Sleaford to live a family life. There were problems associated with this relationship resulting in Annette moving back to Cornwall and living with us for 18 months. However the relationship was never completely over and in 2013 she moved back to Lincolnshire, where she bought a house in Cranwell, but spends much of her time with Brian and family.

It is appropriate to show more up to date photos of the four older grandchildren so I have included one of Nick’s children in ATC uniform from 2012. Charlotte and Connor still attend the ATC but Curtis has given up to pursue other interests.

I have also included a recent one of Joe taken whilst he was staying with us earlier this year. Joe is not yet 14 and is already about 5’ 10” tall so is definitely following in his Dad’s footsteps as far as height is concerned.
